The therapeutic efficacy of Sci-Feron™ is believed to be due to four different biological effects: anti-viral, anti-proliferative, differentiation-inducing and immunomodulatory.
The antiviral and immunomodulatory effects of SciFeron™ or other different forms of recombinant interferon are in clinical trials for a number of other viral and metastatic diseases, including hepatitis A, HIV, and a number of blood and solid tumour cancers.
The unwanted host response that appears to occur after prolonged treatment with less pure forms of recombinant interferon is less likely with SciFeron™ due to its higher purity.
The higher purity of SciFeron™ may also lead to lower dosing requirements and an increase in the product yield, representing both a clinical advantage and a price advantage over existing interferon.
As of late 2005, SciFeron™ is ready for clinical trials and we anticipate continued clinical development.
